Grey's Anatomy star T.R. Knight says he's gay but hopes people don't consider that "the most interesting part of me." Knight plays Dr. George O'Malley on the blockbuster drama, a bumbling, puppy-eyed surgeon that has long been in love with Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) on the #1 rated show. In his most engrossing scene to date, he finally gets to make love to Meredith, only to have the tryst end in a heart-wrenching twist.
The show's cast was already noted for its racial and ethnic diversity. Now we can openly add sexual orientation to that list.
The character of George has been my favorite from the pilot episode forward and Knight's portrayal is the reason. Lets hope we see him for many years to come and that the producers keep his character straight. Knight playing straight shouldn't be any less believable than him playing a doctor.
Media reports have suggested that Knight was forced out of the closet after details of a fight between co-stars Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey became public. Washington was irate when Dempsey was late to shoot a scene. When Dempsey argued back, Washington said he wouldn't put up with any excuses and grabbed Dempsey by the throat and yelled, "I'm not your little faggot" like T.R.
Where's the chorus of voices now that were so quick to call Mel Gibson to task? This guy wasn't even drunk! At the very least, Washington should be reprimanded and/or dumped for creating a hostile work environment.
