Laura Bush Stumps For John Sweeney

Laura Bush was at a fundraiser in Saratoga Springs, NY for U.S. Rep. John Sweeney yesterday. It was $150/plate and $2,100 for a picture with the First Lady. Senator John McCain stumped for him at a fundraiser in Rensselaer County back in August.

The Democrats seem focused on unseating Sweeney with their candidate Kirsten Gillibrand. It seems like the number of television ads are running about 4 to 1 in her favor. Her first set of ads concentrated on linking Sweeney to Bush by highlighting his voting record of 100% in agreement with Bush. The ads progressed to linking Sweeney to the failed policy in Iraq. And liberal group Moveon.org ran quite a few spots linking Sweeney to lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Sweeney, on the other hand, is trying to portray Gillibrand as a rich bitch from New York City that is making tons of money by investing in companies profiting from the Iraq war. He's also been calling on her to release her tax info implying that she is hiding something.

Stay tuned. This is a heavily Republican district, but by the looks of the amount of cash being spent, Dems must think it's in play.
