What's In A Name? Perhaps Everything.

I love pickles; I hate olives...both black and green, pimento stuffed and plain, Spanish and Greek. So is it any wonder why I always question the taste of Mt. Olive brand pickles? It bugs me every time I eat one. Would they sell more if they were called Mt. Pickle pickles? Would I think they taste better? Why does my brain construct such silly barriers?

The new NBC show Friday Night Lights appears on Tuesday night. It's having trouble finding an audience. Now the brilliant programmers on the #4 out of 4 network tested it at a different day and time. When, you ask? Try Monday night at 10. I want to watch a show about Friday nights on Friday night. Is that weird? Isn't that common sense?

Do you have any paradoxes that you've noticed between a product and its name that doesn't sit well with you?

I just ran across your comments about Mt. Olive Pickle and its name. Here's the dill:

We are named for our hometown, Mount Olive, NC, which, the story goes, is named for the biblical Mount of Olives.

Our name is ironic for two reasons: we don't pack olives, as you've noted. And, we are located on North Carolina's coastal plain. There's not a hill in sight, much less a mountain.

So, no mounts in Mount Olive, or olives, either. Just pickles.

Hope you can find enjoyment in a jar of Mt. Olive products, or a least a good chuckle in our name.

We work, by the way, at the Corner of Cucumber & Vine.
