Before I start this week's recap, I have to say the writers must be doing something right. This blog received THOUSANDS of hits last week as people from around the world used Google to search for "medusa spider." This page came up as the third link provided on such a search. Who knew?
**SPOILER ALERT FOR ENTIRE POST**
• Locke decides to go with the Others. He tells Kate he doesn't want to go home, knows about her background, and that she's on her own since the Others aren't forgiving. Still no sign of his pappa. Is Ben manipulating John to learn his secret understanding of the island?
• Kate is gassed and winds up handcuffed to Juliet out in the jungle. A situation that ended up in a grudge match chick fight only to be interrupted by the wild call of the smoke monster. A sound ominously like what we'd describe as a dinosaur. After they hide in a cage-like formation of tree trunks (or the roots of a Banyan tree?), the monster — who we never see but they do — flashes some electrically charged light at them and then retreats into the forest as mysteriously as it arrived.
• Juliet drops the bomb on Kate that Jack watched her and Sawyer doing the nasty in the bear cage and it broke his heart.
• Juliet, we discover, was also gassed and it would appear that they were left in the jungle as monster bait. The electrical fence that surrounds the Barracks is what keeps it at bay from the Others. Kate and Juliet make it to the fence when old smokey starts another pursuit. Juliet disables the fence via a coded lockbox, they get on the inside of the fence line, and she re-enables it. The monster shows up but can't cross. Juliet admits she doesn't know what it is but that the fence will protect them.
• Hugo warned Sawyer that the natives are getting restless about his anti-social behavior and a vote to banish him is in the offing. After blustering about how he doesn't need anyone, he realizes he'll be up the creek after a failed attempt to catch and gut a fish to eat. He goes on a popularity offensive to win over the camp. He's largely successful (except Sun who keeps giving him the stink eye), and when we find out it was just a ruse by Hugo to get Sawyer to act nice, Hugo annoits him troop leader.
• The barracks has essentially been abandoned and Jack had been gassed. Kate wakes him up and Juliet releases Sayid. After some protestation by Sayid about Juliet coming along, the four of them head back to the beach.
In other news:
• This week was more of Kate's back story. She learns her mother isn't sorry for turning her in to the cops for killing her step father. Regardless of her maltreatment at his hands, mommie dearest has sided with the dead wife beater rather than her daughter.
• In her quest to question her mom, Kate meets up with the woman Sawyer fleeced of all her money in his back story. These folk's lives are all very, and sometimes confusingly, intertwined.
Did you catch anything I didn't?

Okay. I'm new to this show. What the hell was that black smoke thing?
Is the island pergatory? Where did the captors go?
And is there a significance of everything being generic and the dharma symbolism?
This show keeps me coming back for answers -- that's for sure.
Mary
OMG Mary! You are too funny. So much has happened that you really need to rent seasons 1 and 2 to catch up. Seriously. It would take me forever to explain and you wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much!
We don't know what the smoke monster is yet. It is capable of killing as several cast members have met that fate. Sometimes imagery of the survivor's lives can be seen in the smoke, too. I have no idea why it didn't kill the women last night when it had the chance. Those electrical flashes may be why but we don't know yet what that was about. There is some thought that it know good and evil people and only kills evil. Kate is evil and Juliet may be good (she's new this season so we still don't know if she's good or bad yet), so they may have both been spared since Juliet is good and they were handcuffed together.
The writers say that the island isn't pergatory to dispell fan rumors. The Others have the ability to come and go from the island...via a submarine that was blown up 2 episodes ago!
I'm not sure where the captors (called The Others) went...there is another island adjacent to this one they can reach with a little boat. That's probably where they went.
The Dharma Initiative used to run experiments on the island. We still don't quite know the whole story there, but there are several "hatches" around the island with various functions. There are also polar bears running around the island which are probably from these experiments. It is believed that there is some connection between Dharma and The Others but that is still unknown as well.
Seriously. Rent the DVDs. You'll still be confused as the story is probably 1/3 unraveled and we are all confused, but at least you'll be at the same level of confusion as the rest of us! :)
BTW, same for Heroes...but there are fewer episodes so it is easier to catch up.
Both of these shows can be streamed from their respective ABC and NBC web sites.
