It was Haley Scarnato's turn to take her place on the cut list. She hit the talk show circuit over the last week and was absolutely delightful. She said she's getting married and is going home to plan her wedding before the tour starts this summer. Last week I was going to feature her photo in my recap section where I always show my favorite of the night, but since she wasn't my favorite and didn't make the cut, I'll post it here as a fond farewell.
** SPOILER ALERT FOR REST OF POST **
Now for this week's show:
Last week the band seemed to overwhelm the singers. That didn't happen this week, whether the band toned it down, they adjusted the sound system, or the singers just sang stronger. The theme was CW. Reminded me of all the time I've spent in country bars learning to 2-Step/Shadow and line dance. It's been a while. To give you an idea, the macarena was popular at the time!
The Final 7
Jordin Sparks (pictured) — First of all, what a hideous dress! The singing was really good with an awesome hold on the final note. And I liked the fact that she didn't acknowledge the camera on the boom as it flew by her.
Phil Stacey — Finally a genre that suits him. It took all these many weeks to find it. He lost the stupid hat, donned black duds, and sang really well.
Sanjaya Malakar — Fantastic answer to the viewer question, saying he'd like to see Simon sing Shiny, Happy People. Singing-wise, he was off-key quite a bit but he does just well enough to stick around every week. This was the first week I didn't feel sorry for him. I'm on the verge of turning...and voting for him. I know, I'm sorry, I'm ashamed of myself. Maxim magazine named Sanjaya "Girl of the Day." That pisses me off. [Thanks for the heads up to Joe.My.God. from Towleroad.]
LaKisha Jones — She did pretty well. It's hard to live up to my darling Carrie Underwood's version of Jesus Take The Wheel.
Chris Richardson — Martina McBride declared him versatile. Snicker. The singing wasn't so good...flat in places. But I did enjoy the banjo!
Melinda Doolittle — Wow, she's been hiding about two cup sizes under her clothes up until this week. Where did those come from? She slipped into the CW theme quite nicely, and quite surprisingly. I'm telling ya, this one is gonna be hard to beat.
Blake Lewis — He sounded a bit Morrissey when he started out! Vocals were off, and I'm not sure an argyle sweater would fit in at a honky tonk. His good looks are gonna carry him a long way. His personal life has been keep under wraps...I think his family roots are in the Mormon church and I wonder if he follows their teachings and views.

Here's the thing with Sanjaya. I think the Maxim thing is disgusting. But we shouldn't vote for him to stick around so WE can champion him as a cause. He's just a kid who should be allowed to go back to his life. He can't be enjoying this any more. The sooner this kid can go home and be out of the public eye the sooner he can begin to process all of this negative attention and start to deal with it.
Also, when Martina McBride called Chris versatile, my Scott chimed in "That's what Blake said." LOL
