The Devil Is Happy Today

Jerry Falwell, the televangelist who founded the Moral Majority and used it to mold the religious right into a political force, died shortly after being found unconscious in his office at Liberty University. He was 73.

Some of his more "enlightening" views:

On September 11, 2001: "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen'" and went on to say the attackers had given us "probably what we deserve."

On homosexuality: "AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals."

On religion and politics: God "is a Republican" and Jesus "was the First American."

On the Teletubbies character Tinky Winky: "He is purple - the gay-pride color; and his antenna is shaped like a triangle - the gay-pride symbol."
What an asshole.

Wow. Here I've been hunkering down, waiting for the s*** to hit the fan for my Falwell eulogy, and it turns out I was being too nice.
