Memorial Day

In honor of Memorial Day, here's a pic I took of the Washington Monument. It was undergoing refurbishment and you can see the platforms used by the workers.

The last time I was in Washington D.C. was for the Millenium March in 2000. I went with three friends (two were a couple, the third and I had dated but were just friends by then) and we had a wonderful time. I'm a great person to travel with — during waking hours, that is — because at night I've been told I sleep like a freight train. I'm mostly a talker and the conversations I'm having in my dreams I have out loud in bed. Folks have told me it freaks them out because they wake up in the middle of the night to a conversation but they can't see anyone else in the room. But because I'm so "convincing" they get wiggy that there's someone else in the room and for some reason they just can't hear their side of things. (When I was in NYC last year, I was told that I made a commotion every time a siren went by.)

Anyway, these three in Washington were no prize as far as sleeping goes. I was the first to go to sleep. When I'm ready to sleep, I just conk out. I awoke about three in the morning and I thought I was Snow White cause I had Snory, Wheezy, and Sniffy in the room with me. I was looking around the room for Prince Charming in a leather harness but to no avail. Instead, I got serenaded by a three piece band for crying out loud. And they were complaining about me?

We had gone to the march as part of the "Orange County Contingent." Which, being 2,500 miles away, was about 30 people that we knew. Basically all the folks I hung out with in my political circles went. I love Washington — all except that area I found myself in at about midnight trying to find the Eagle. Same thing happened to me last year at Hotlanta Pride...this little gay boy found himself in the wrong part of town. Sometimes I think it's a miracle I'm not dead.
