Since they don't grow worth a damn in Southern California (and ugh, I've tried, including dumping chunks of ice on the crowns in winter), I have to enjoy them vicariously. Thanks for the lovely pics. Praise Him!
Sister Nancy, I feel your pain. I used to put bulbs in my refrigerator to simulate winter when I lived in Orange County. So I went all tropical, and planted things there I never could grow here. I got a kick out of making banana bread from my own bananas, OJ from my own oranges, and guacamole from my own avocados!
The peonies are almost gone. I'm a bit late on the pics although they bloomed in stages...the white ones first about a month ago, then the red, and the pink/white are just finishing. I wanted to hold the pics for a single post.
My echinacea is up and about 3' now. The black eyed susans are about half the size. The hostas are all blooming but they are kinda ugly so no nice pics. Although I did make a trip around the garden last night collecting pics of other stuff in bloom for future posts!
I've done a good job at staging the garden so something is always flowering. I've noticed from your posts that you seem to be a couple weeks ahead of me with the same flowers. I would have thought we'd be warmer and earlier than you. We're Zone 4/5 here and in an odd area...a valley where the Hudson and Mohawk rivers meet.
The only way I can do that is to lose significant petalage at the same time.
I get that you stage your pictures (I carry a small spray bottle with me) but what is it with ants and peonies? It's like with hydrangeas. No matter what I do every year they get infested with little old ladies.
And all the hard candy and grandchild photos in the world can't stop it from happening.

Your peonies are just stunning. I will plant some next year...

Wow, peonies this late! Mine have long since gone past. What's even stranger is my echinacea are blooming already! I think it must be the end times.

What's your secret for keeping ants off peonies?
I don't have a single picture of a peony that doesn't have an ant on it.
(OMG, I can see his peonies. Hee hee)
Someone had to say it.
MSM---My secret? Shake the flowers and flick the ants off! These had them scurrying around too...I just "staged" the flowers for the pics.
