I'm More Popular Than I Thought

I just bumble along writing my posts and hoping for the best regarding readership. My visitors are apparently readers and not commenters since my number of comments are always low. I feel like I've had a successful post if I get over five comments.

I've always wondered how many hits others get. This isn't a contest because each blog is so unique with style and content; any comparison is purely out of curiosity. Still, I wonder how well I'm doing. I also think about how many referrals my site makes to other blogs. I try to highlight and mention different blogs to promote cross traffic, whether by adding sites to my blogroll or mentioning folks with links in specific posts.

Moby posted some of his stats this week. I decided to look up mine on StatCounter as a comparison and I was really surprised by what I found. Moby, best as I can tell, is a darling of the blog world. He gets a lot of comments and seems to have strong relationships with other bloggers.

He wrote that he averages over 10,000 Page Loads a month and that in the most recent month received 2,586 Unique Visitors. My Page Loads hover just above my Unique Visitor numbers which means that people hit my site, read what they read, then move off. I guess once folks surf to Moby, they stay and poke around a while.

Last month I had 2,146 Unique Visitors and in March, my highest month to date, I had 2,952! I was really shocked.

I look at my numbers each day and never look at weekly or monthly tallies. I receive a lot of hits from Google searches for specific things. I try to write about a wide range of topics so Google serves up lots of different posts. For instance, the post that gets the most hits from a search is where I describe how to get theatre tickets at TKTS in New York City. People going to NYC do a search, come and read that post, then move on.

I need to think of a way to get one-time visitors to stay, look around, and become regular readers. Maybe more posts about sex? Well, if I was having any, I suppose I could write about it!

Blog stats are the new heroin.

Oh lord, there you go feeding my ego. Never a wise move. *g*

I never use to monitor my stats until I noticed a lot of other bloggers doing it. I use Google analytics as they make it so easy to do.

As for "blog darling?" I'm flattered but hardly is it the case. *g* My stats/comments are pitiful compared to many on my blogroll. Blogging for me is an extension of my already social behavior. I think I get out of it what I put into it. I've made several real life good friends thru blogging as well.

Of course, there are a few selling points I've learned almost always work to boost traffic.

1) Sex, (being a dirty slut, an easy one for me.)
2) Scandals, the more personal the better.
3) Drama.

The latter I tend to shy away from but I know many a blog that is drama filled and the boys eat it up.

There you have it, my secret is out.

Oh, and thanks for the mention. I'm extremely flattered.

Hey Moby!

Thanks for stopping by. I've got you on my Google Reader so I always catch up with you when you make a new post!

As I mentioned, our blogs are very different in style and content. You are really documenting your life so your comments are more personal and I can see where that would cultivate friendships.

I wrote that you are a blog darling based on my perception that, at least from my perspective out here in the blogosphere, you seem to be popular and well liked!
