Low-Cal Diet Tip #1: Pick A Sensible Beverage

One of the things I struggle with when I diet is what to drink. Soda is one of my weaknesses and although I like Diet Coke even better than regular Coke, I'm convinced that the phosphorus added to diet soda is the cause of my kidney stones. There's always water, you say? Yes, but that gets boring after a while and just isn't a good alternative solution for me.

The trick? Get healthy juice and cut it by 50% with water. All the flavor, all the hydration, half the calories!

Compare:

Generic Lemon-Lime Soda
8 oz = 106 calories (12 oz Can = 160 calories)
High-fructose corn syrup
No artificial sweeteners, lots of chemicals

Generic Diet Lemon-Lime Soda
8 oz = 0 calories (12 oz Can = 0 calories)
Artificial sweeteners, lots of chemicals including phosphorus

Glass of Ocean Spray 100% Juice Cranberry / Pomegranate Juice
8 oz = 140 calories
Cut with 50% water = 70 calories
High in anti-oxidants
Natural sugars, but none added
No artificial sweeteners

Glass of Local Apple Cider
8 oz = 120 calories
Cut with 50% water = 60 calories
Natural sugars, but none added
No artificial sweeteners
The fruit juice with water is a great solution that is as tasty, more healthy, and diet friendly. Drink up!

Cut your natural juices with Selzer Water - it's more fun that way. Especially Pomegranate juice.

I actually like the drink mixes. They're made with Splenda and have 0 calories. I know, I know but I drink a lot of water, I mean a lot. Also, walking and lifting weights are the fastest way to burn fat. You don't need to get on a body building program, toning and strength exercises with weights burns fat more effectively than aerobic. Don't neglect aerobic though, you need the cardio for endurance.

I'm going to make this diet tips a series and already have a few more written. It will be cool to share ideas to keep us fit and healthy.

RG--I love pomegranate juice! I wish it were more affordable. Sometimes the local grocery sells apple cider with pomegranate juice added at the same price as just cider so I get that. I'm not a seltzer fan, but adding it sounds like a great idea to give me some sparkle. I wonder how many calories are in champagne...maybe I can switch to mimosas!

EG--I've been walking briskly every day. I was getting shin splints and a blister on my achilles so I changed from my sneaks to flip flops yesterday. Big mistake. Now I have blisters on the balls of both feet.

What about Crystal Light? You're gay, aren't you?

I used to drink 2-4 litres of Pepsi a day for 20 years. I now haven't had any pop for months. I weaned myself off caramel first by going to 7-Up or gingerale, then off the carbonation altogether.

Water, Kool-Aid, sports drink, juice, iced tea... There are loads of choices. V8 and tomato juice even count as vegetable servings.

I also agree about the pomegranate juice. I just discovered it myself: it's amazing.
