I consider myself a goodie two shoes. I suspect that a lot of people who know me would say the same thing — some with contempt, others with a bit of admiration.
My latest endeavor is to clean up the trash along the road where I walk. I've thought about it for years but the task just seemed overwhelming. Beer bottles, McDonald's bags, soda cans.
A week ago I saw a woman stop on her bicycle and she was picking up bottles. I stopped and chatted, thanking her for picking stuff up. I thought it was just to get the recycle return money but she said she was always picking up garbage and by starting with the recyclables, she was able to clean things up and recycle at the same time. I liked her attitude!
Well that was all the incentive I needed. I told her I was considering it but no one else seemed to care. Now that I had a partner to help, I'd join in. So I went and bought a contraption to help me pick up the trash. I figure if I get a bag's worth a day, I'll have it all done in about 15 trips. I've already picked up four bags of litter. Slowly but surely!
