Rose #2

You can see the painted cement baby deer next to the trellis in the top photo of the red rose. I'm trying to get clematis to grow up and cover the trellis but I have been unsuccessful for two years running. You can also see where the mice have chewed the hole of the bird house in the pine tree to be quite a bit bigger for easier access.

Clematis like full sun and cool feet. Mulch them.

I plant ferns with my clematis to shade the roots. It also depends on the variety you've chosen. I have one that goes great guns and another one that is very prone to mildew. They can be tricky.
