There's something about the military jets flying over the beginning of the Rose Parade that always gives me chills. I still remember when the Stealth bomber flew above after decades of secrecy. Today, it was three F/A 18 Hornets. This show of military strength and technological prowess makes me proud. I probably have my priorities out of whack, but there it is.
Each year, American Honda has one of my favorites. This year their float transformed a flower- and seed-covered representation of a Honda Ridgeline pickup truck into a space ship piloted by Asimo their robot in the front and blasting fire out the back!
I never did make it up to see the parade in all the years I lived out there. I'm just not the type to camp out overnight to see anything, let alone dealing with all the people and traffic (at least now the Gold Line serves the area). A couple of years I went up the next day to see the floats. After they travel the route, they're all parked in the streets near Victory Park where you can go to view them. Yep, you and a million other Angelinos who thought of the same thing. The secret is to get there first thing in the morning. It's still SRO, but by the afternoon, the ten lines to get in are about three blocks long each.
Michael over at Manhattan Chowder posted the barn-raising dance scene from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers last week. I commented that I loved it and all scenes from The Music Man. Then, to my delight, Wells Fargo ran the first commercial during the Rose Parade. It was a contest winner featuring The Wells Fargo Wagon. I still do my banking through Wells Fargo...unfortunately I have to mail all my deposits to Portland, Oregon since they haven't made it here yet!

Thanks for the wonderful tip, I am going for the first time on Wednesday to see the floats.
Funny, I've lived in NYC for 16 years and have never been to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Something about it being cold and all those tourists! But I did manage to see the inflation of the balloons this year--it's only 2 blocks away after all. The Wells Fargo commercial is a hoot! Thanks for the shout-out, too! Happy New Year.
Back in 1980 or so, Iowa went to the Rose Bowl. I remember we drove out to Colorado to ski, then continued on to the bowl game. The parade was cool, and I can remember actually SMELLING the floats go by.
The Rose Bowl Parade is a family tradition in my parent's household. We have watched it every year for as long as I can remember. I still love it!
