Botany 101: Name That Plant

Last time I tried this, we came to a consensus that I was looking at a Chinese Dogwood in one photo and bluebells in the other. (I ended up ordering some bluebell bulbs, too.)

Now I need your help on this perineum perennial garden gem:

They grow really well in direct sun and spread a little bit each year. I'm in Zone 4/5 here so they are hearty from 0˚F to 100˚F. There are 5 petals on the 1.5" flowers which are more purple than pink and they cover the plant. They are rapid growers and get to be about 18" tall. If I trim them back at the end of June, they will be back to full size and flowering within a month.

I've been doing a major overhaul in one section of the garden and I'd like to split a couple of these and add them into the landscape. Problem is, the area I'm reworking is 100% shade with little water and I'm not sure they will grow. I can always experiment but I'd rather just know ahead of time and spend my effort somewhere else in the yard.

I've searched online and looked through all the gardening books at the nursery with no success.

Anybody?

I think it's a hardy geranium but I can't be more specific without my trusty gardening books which are at home. I'll see what I can find online since I have a few minutes.

A beautiful picture!
It looks like Geranium sanguineum, a nice and long-flowering cranesbill. Enjoy!

Ya gotta love the Internet! A guy from upstate NY writes a post with a question, a guy from England is the first to comment, a guy from the West Coast sets us on the right path, and a guy from Sweden brings it home!

Rodger and Mikael will have to share the bragging rights!!!

Mikael--Thanks for stopping by and I hope to see you back. If you like flower pics, click on the "flower" label in this post and you should see all I've uploaded.

Thanks guys. :)

P.S. Now that I know its name, I looked it up and it seems like it won't do so well in 100% shade so I won't try to split them.

Thanks! I'd been wondering what this was myself.
