I went back up to the orchard last Friday. The day was deliriously incredible and I enjoyed the fresh air, the walk about, and time away from the homestead.
The last time I was up there taking pics, I lost my lens cap. I decided to retrace my steps on the off chance that I'd find it or that they'd have it at the lost and found. I returned capless.
I found a new favorite type of apple...the Ruby Jon. A sample is in the first pic below. They are so dark, they look like plums covering the trees.
Another type, the Macoun, is one that I had for the first time this trip. They are small, about four good bites in all, and the tart flavor that I favor. I ate one tree-side and brought one home for mother dear.

I love the tart ones for cooking, but my favorite for eating tree side is by far, the delicious and sweet Honeycrisp!
Waht? No "Honeycrisps"??
I love McCoun's myself. I found out about them several years ago when I was padding my income out a little working a second job at a specialty grocery store. Definitely an eating apple as opposed to a cooking apple.
My favorite cooking apple is the Northern Spy which is almost impossible to find anymore.
EG--they were picking Northern Spy a couple of rows over from the Empires. I'll have to stop and taste them next time!
McCouns is a new name to us Westerners....now I have to see if I can find one. Our Organic store just did a tasting and featured PInk Pearls...another new name to me, and delicious. It IS that Apple Crisp season, eh? Sounds like your "homestead" is more like an estate. Fabulous.
EG and Mark--The ones at the orchard here are spelled Macoun and I found it on wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macoun_apple
Not sure on EG's spelling...perhaps a local spelling as the article says they are sometimes pronounced "McCowan."
