Congress is contemplating a huge bailout for the big three.
Here's an idea. Rather than give the money to THEM, we give the money to the American taxpayers that will be footing the bill.
The government could slap a HUGE rebate on American-made cars in the form of a tax credit. For every American-made car purchased that achieves over 35 MPG, a $10,000 tax credit would be in place. Cars that achieve over 30 MPG would receive a $5,000 credit and 25 MPG would be $2,500.
$25B means there would be 2.5 MILLION credits available at $10,000.
• People get new cars
• Production lines keep running
• Bankruptcies are avoided
• American workers are employed
• The American safety net won't be burdened with unemployment insurance, healthcare, food stamps, etc.
• A shift can be made to higher fuel efficiency vehicles
Makes sense to me. Therefore, the government won't be doing it!
UPDATE: I sent this to my Congressmember Kirsten Gillibrand.
