Germ Warfare

I saw this story about germs on shopping carts on Today yesterday. It made my trip to pick up some groceries a whole new reality.

The most disturbing quotes:
"...you can come across more fecal bacteria on a shopping cart than you can most public rest rooms..."

"...shopping carts rank third, behind playgrounds and public transit hand rails when it comes to germ exposure..."
The killer for me was when they show people placing their fruits and veggies in the top of the basket, then show someone placing a diaper-clad child in the same place.

Lesson: Wipe down your shopping cart handle and basket with anti-bacterial handiwipes (our local supermarket provides them at the entrance) and place all fruits and veggies in plastic bags so they don't come in contact with the cart.

Ick.

health concerns are always important fir sure. I have NJ doubt if we did tests if most surfaces we come in contact with we'd be shocked and repulsed. Thing is, we don't live in a sterile world. I also can't help feeling this us another attempt to keep we the sheeple distracted and worried about little things so we pay less attention to the real issues in this country . " keep them scared and focused on these issues in their own lives so they don't notice what we're doing to their economy and their civil rights." let's face it, more people care about poop on their peaches than they do about equal rights for their neighbor. Sigh.......

I read about this and many other things a while back too. Whenever we go shopping I bring wipes with me and wipe just about everything. The husband tells me I am worse than Niles Crane!

The Mom in me has always been pretty careful about this. However, the drinker in me just saw a report on the lemon and orange wedges put in my beverages at bars and restaurants. I now cringe whenever I see that slice of lemon floating in my iced tea and water glass. My Vodka Tonic?...I figure the alcohol will take care of those germies!

Reducing our exposure to germs ultimately weakens our immune systems; anti-bacterial soap is actually declining in favour because of this.

I say thank you to all the filthy people of the world for making me stronger.
