Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) is dropping an executive order prohibiting employment discrimination against gay and lesbian state workers that was put in place in 2004 by his Democratic predecessor.
“The reason for allowing the order to lapse is that I don’t think it is necessary to create additional special categories or special rights,” Jindal told The New Orleans Advocate newspaper.
“We are firmly and strongly committed to fair treatment of all of our people and certainly don’t condone discrimination in any form,” Jindal said.
I sent the Governor an email:
I just read that you will not be extending employment protections for LGBT people. If you feel that existing laws already cover us, then what is the harm in extending this executive order?Oh, and FUCK YOU, Bobby Jindal.
My (straight, white, congregant of Saddleback Church) best friend and I just booked a vacation to meet in New Orleans. Our plans were to stay at the Place d'Arms and do some volunteering while we were there.
If you don't care about me, we don't care about you. We are canceling our trip. Every bill that comes up in Congress to help NOLA, I will be on the phone with my local reps urging them to vote NO.
I'm sure every LGBT person in America that has ever sent money for Katrina relief is regretting it. I hope they send their future donations elsewhere. You people have a funny way of showing your appreciation.

Sad, sad sad state of affairs.. as the citizens of NOLA seem to be of another state of mind.. Typical disconnect.
Oh, I didn't really cancel my trip...it just seemed to give the email a little punch!
These people don't listen to persuasive arguments about rights and doing the right thing, they care about money.
What really needs to happen is NOLA hotel owners phoning and writing him messages saying they just received XXX number of cancellations (whether true or not) and that he's killing their business and they'll do everything in their power to defeat him in the next election.
I mean, I did as much and I don't even live there!
I was sicken by reading this, especially because Oklahoma (where I live) borders Louisiana and we've had a few ignorant hate talkers making national news lately.
In fact, on August 30, a concert is being given for the benefit of Sally Kern's opponent. I will be posting the information on my blog soon, but I don't know all the details yet. I want to get the word out because I really feel this woman needs to be out of office and a message needs to be sent that, just because we are in the middle of the country doesn't mean we will tolerate discrimination.
Money talks... You did the right thing.
Please don't punish the residents for what this shitty power hungry veep hopeful says, or does. Check out the NOLA blogs. These people are struggling to rebuild and appreciate every helping hand and every penny that has been offered - mostly to individuals - but offered none the less.
I recently returned from NOLA and it breaks my heart that this person (normally perceived as the 'other') has the balls to even think this would pass unnoticed.
I was able to meet with a number of progressive NOLA bloggers, some gay, most straight, but sexuality didn't matter. They are all trying to rebuild, they all have a stake in the community, the arts, their family heritage and traditions.
Never be sorry for what you have done with your own hands or given to the people of the Gulf region.
NOLA is the place of my birth and I was appalled that Trump has been lobbying to build a "resort complex" in the Lower Ninth and NOLA East near the lake.
I didn't cancel the trip for just this reason.
Whether your fighting to rebuild your house or fighting for your rights, one hand washes the other and they need to step up. It just bugs me that there are some in NOLA who would be first in line to take "gay" money and the first in line to kick us when we're down.
"...neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you."
The good folks in NOLA need to get on the phone and bitch this guy out, making him pay for being such an asshole. Silence condones his behavior!
The good folks in NOLA, as well as the rest of the gulf coast, have been organizing and coordinating efforts by neighborhood as well as city wide.
Phone calls don't do it; letters to the editor and state and federal politicians, attending community meetings, and testifying before the legislature are better ways to get the point across. And local leaders are doing that - and more.
But aside from Harry Shearer (at his own site and at HuffPo - who has been writing essays on this fiasco since October 2005 - the media plays the blame game.
There are at least 28 other cities in danger of levee failure, including D.C. yet you won't hear anything about the the fact that the ACOE is responsible for the shotty work done after Betsy and Camille. They even admitted it in a long report that was virtually ignored by the MSM.
You will see and hear when you visit, stories that will shock and amaze you. See destroyed neighborhoods that will shock you no end.
These people aren't just trying to rebuild their own homes, but by helping neighbors rebuild are attempting to rebuild their local communities.
