The NY 20th Congressional District (map from Wikipedia), currently served by Kirsten Gillibrand and encompassing a large swath of eastern upstate NY, may be back in play. Two years ago, Ms. Gillibrand defeated the longtime philandering, wife beating incumbent Republican and made it a Democratic district as they came to power in the House back in 2006. This area is traditionally Republican...think recently retired NY State Senator Joe Bruno.
However, if media buying is any indication, the GOP must think this seat is in play. Republican Sandy Treadwell is spending MAJOR $$$ on TV ad time. He's on constantly pushing a folksy, pragmatic, economic/energy independence message. No negativity at all. Interesting approach is that he never mentions an opponent — he has to defeat other GOPers in the primary then Gillibrand in November — and doesn't even mentioned the district he's running in. Given that our media market covers several congressional districts/seats (including southern VT and western MA), I've been scratching my head on this one.
We'll see how it goes.
