Oh, The Humidity

I've been griping about the humidity. Not nearly as much on here as I have been in "real life." Heat, rain, humidity. What a summer.

A couple of weeks ago, I had to purchase a new dehumidifier (Sears Kenmore 50 Pint for $179) for the basement. The one we had from Montgomery Wards just gave up the ghost. (Remember Monkey Wards?) I can't blame it. It was about 30 years old and had performed beyond the call of duty.

The new one is working awesome and has a feature that the last one didn't. It has a drainage hose option so you can collect the water in the integrated basin or send it through a hose out the back.

I've positioned it up on a counter with the drainage hose into the clothes washer. Then I just remove the hose and put the washer on the spin cycle and spin the water out to the septic tank. This is what I did before except I'd have to go down and empty the catch basin into the washer once a day.

The improvement means it can run continuously rather than automatically shutting off after five gallons when it is full.

Since installed, it has filled the washing machine's basin half full every other day. That's a lot of moisture taken out of the air. In these parts, we have to worry about black mold and this reduces the chance of that as well.

Ooh...Black Mold. That's a D&D monster, if I remember correctly. Seriously. :)

I feel for you, but I actually LIKE humidity. Out here in the desert, I have to run a humidifier most of the cooler months. Black mold vs. nosebleeds and wrinkles...it ain't fair!

That was a really good idea to do that with the washing machine!

Montgomery Ward - now there's a blast from the past!

We didn't have them in Canada, we only got the commercials on our American channels, and I remember one time while visiting Spokane I insisted we stop and go in. Once inside I took one look around and said "It's just like Sears". I was pretty disgusted. I must have been eight. (Thirty years ago!)

That trip I had the same experience with JC Penney; it was a good time, but I was pretty disillusioned about advertising by the end of it.
