300 Million And Counting

A couple of interesting facts noted by Wall Street Journal editor Stephen Moore on the arrival of the 300 millionth American:

— The population of the U.S. is expected to reach 400 million in 40 years.
— The majority of U.S. land is uninhabited. Texas alone is so large that we could put every U.S. family of four in the state and give them two acres to call their own and the rest of the country would be deserted.
— U.S. farmers grow three times as much food on one-third as many acres and a third fewer man-hours as 75 years ago.
— Childhood death rates in the U.S. have fallen by 90% over the last century.
— The life expectancy has increased by more than 30 years over the last century.
