The glass-walled Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall opened in the City of Costa Mesa in Orange County, CA. The privately funded $200M expansion to the Orange County Performing Arts Center (OCPAC) has been a much anticipated addition to the first Segerstrom Hall that opened 20 years ago. Architect Cesar Pelli's glass exterior ripples like the water of the nearby Pacific Ocean, echoed by the curvy white rims of the four interior balconies. There's plenty of maple veneer on the walls, as well as exposed wood on the rims of each scarlet velvet-upholstered seat.
I was an enthusiastic supporter of all OCPAC performances and had subscriptions to the Broadway Series for almost a decade and attended various symphony, opera, and ballet performances as well. I watched this being built...check out the great time lapse of the construction at the web site of the Pacific Symphony that calls the new hall their home. The symphony is led by Carl St. Clair who, btw, is a very likable fellow. With any luck, I'll be able to take in a performance soon.
