"The Crone Returneth"

Saw Notes On A Scandal yesterday. The movie was great. I know when something really affects me when it dominates my dreams that night!

It's up for four Oscars:

Judi Dench — Leading Actress
Cate Blanchett — Supporting Actress
Patrick Marber — Writing, Adapted Screenplay
Philip Glass — Score
Loved them all!

So ... what are your thoughts about the whole thing being anti-gay? Curious on your take ...

** Spoiler Alert **

I saw it with a gay friend of mine ("Work In Progress" in my blogroll) and I don't think either of us thought there was anti-gay subtext. Dame Judy's character is a creep that just happens to be a lesbian. I've met my share of gay and lesbian creeps!

Her family in the Christmas scenes (what was up with those paper crowns?) all seemed to be accepting and supportive. The only negative reaction I can think of was when she stroked Cate's arms. I can understand the reaction of a straight person to that and she was quite cordial about the whole thing. It wasn't said that she was uneasy about the lesbianism...she could have just been weirded out by the battleaxe or that her friend was hitting on her.

I've got chills again just thinking about it!

For what it's worth, I tend to agree with you -- but a lot of my gay friends who have seen it think it's somehow our duty to be offended by it.

I agree with you YOY and red. The anti-gay subtext never entered my mind. I was more affected by the necessity many of us feel, to hide our true selves and the lengths one may go to satisfy our innermost desires and feelings and longing for love, acceptance, intimacy. I thought it was a very powerful movie. The revelation that broke apart the family hit close to home.
