Don't Ask Don't Tell Under Fire

Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, likened homosexuality to adultery and said the military should not condone it by allowing gays to serve openly in the armed forces. He was responding to a question about the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in an interview with the Chicago Tribune.

"I believe homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts," Pace was quoted as saying. "I do not believe the United States is well served by a policy that says it is OK to be immoral in any way."

And I'm supporting this guy with my tax dollars to protect me? He'd probably just as soon shoot me as protect me.

It is estimated that there are 65,000 gay and lesbian troops now serving in the armed forces. Many of them, including the first wounded soldier in Iraq, are serving in the "war on terror." In a poll of service members, of those who said they were certain that a member of their unit was gay or lesbian, two-thirds did not believe it hurt morale.

Rep. Martin Meehan has introduced legislation to change the ban. Meehan introduced a similar bill in 2005 that eventually attracted 122 co-sponsors, including Republican Chris Shays and Independent Bernard Sanders. John Shalikashvili, the retired Army general who was Joint Chiefs chairman when the policy was adopted, said in January that he has changed his mind on the issue since meeting with gay servicemen. I bet. Funny how things change when you need more warm bodies to send into the meat grinder.

UPDATE: General Pace has expressed regret but hasn't apologized for his remarks.

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she was "disappointed in the moral judgment" voiced by Pace and the military should consider changing policy on allowing gays to serve in its ranks. "We need patriotic Americans who exist across the board in our population."

Republican Sen. John Warner, a veteran member of the Senate's Armed Services Committee, said through a spokesman: "I respectfully but strongly disagree with the chairman's view that homosexuality is immoral."

Ah, not good enough to be elevated to first class citizen status, but good enough for cannon fodder on the down low. I heart USA!

An AOL News poll showed nearly 271,000 votes as of 1:45pm EDT. The margin is two to one in favor of SUPPORT for General Pace's comments regarding gays in the military.

How do you feel about Pace's comments?
Agree 65% (~176,000)
Disagree 33%
Not sure 3%
Total Votes: 270,644

I applaud General Peter Pace for taking the correct stand on this matter. His comments are right on target. There is NO REASON for him to apologize to anyone. His personal beliefs are his own and NO ONE need apologize for their personal beliefs. While I agree that he should be loving and respectful in his statements and (more importantly) actions, being forced to accept and celebrate the choice of homosexual behavior is NOT something anyone should be confronted with -- military or civilian.
These gay advocacy groups need to sit down and shut up! There is NOTHING "outrageous" or "insensitive" in what General Pace said in the interview. I listened to part of his comments. He was soft-spoken and respectful, but also firm in his resolve. Pace answered one question with a very straightforward and truthful answer, "The US Military’s mission fundamentally rests on the trust, confidence, cooperation amongst its members, and the homosexual lifestyle does not comport with that kind of trust and confidence and therefore is not supported within the US military. I’ll leave it at that."
Homosexuality *is* an immoral act. It is NOT natural, normal or moral. The lifestyle choice is rife with promiscuity, predatorship and infidelity -- all matters that point to trust, confidence and cooperation. General Pace should be applauded for standing his ground and speaking the truth.
I, personally, plan to be active in the fight against these homosexual advocacy groups as they seek to villainize General Pace. Here's hoping you will join the fight as well. It's high time conservatives (especially Christians) stand up for our beliefs and convictions.

Well, Charlie, yours certainly is one point of view!

I say:

It may be immoral in your eyes, but obviously not in mine or the millions of others like me. For me, it is natural, normal AND moral. So interesting that you are such an expert. Are you also an expert on what it's like to choose to be a woman?

I say:

If you weren't such a homophobe, you might actually get to know some homosexuals instead of what you read on the Focus on the Family web site.

Rife with promiscuity? You should listen to all my friends grousing that they can't get laid. And you want to see promiscuity, look at spring break in Daytona Beach. I'd suggest cleaning up your own before you worry about me and mine.

Infidelity? Really. You're joking, right. If I have to listen to one more co-worker talk about how they're banging some chick on the side I'll puke.

It's a free country. But you're on the losing side of history. The U.S. is the only western military power left that bars gays and lesbians. Oh, and independent scientific (read: non-AOL) polls show the military is full of queers, everyone knows it, and they're okay with it. It's just the people at the top that are throwing stones. In case you missed it, the electorate threw these bums out of office en masse last November.

Do you feel safer that 50 gay military translators were fired when they are in such need? I don't. Some military, putting religious prejudice above the safety of our entire country. Way to go!

I say:

You don't sound very Christian to me. :( Your Bible says to condemn and hate. My Bible says to love and understand. I like my Bible better. Now fuck off.
