These crocus, planted along the front walk, just started to bloom. As we expect snow tonight, I hope they make it through!
Did you know...the spice saffron is obtained from the stigmas of Crocus sativus, an autumn/fall-blooming species.

And knowing is half the battle. Pretty.
Purty! My tulips have yet to bloom. I tell people that they're smarter than the average tulip, and they're waiting for the last cold front to move through.
Truth is, I'm worried. Oh well.
This is one time of the year when it's great being from Vancouver. You can say, "Oh really? They're just coming up? Ours are already done." Of course, anyone from SoCal, Hawaii, or Florida just rolls their eyes.
It really doesn't seem like spring until these little guys show themselves, does it?

Being an avid gardener, and having spent 20 years in SoCal, I can tell you anything that needs a cold winter just doesn't do well. That means no lilacs, peonies, daffodils, tulips, crocus. Then again, you get palm trees, bananas, citrus, and much more. I miss my tropical gardens!
The crocus survived yesterday's 2" of snow but they are predicting a possible whopper of a storm early next week.
