It was a surprising (at least to me) elimination that sent Melinda Doolittle home without the title that should have been hers. Throughout the season I have thought that Jordin has a voice for radio and Melinda has a voice for stage. The problem is that Jordin's performances are spotty and Melinda, week after week, never made a mistake. As far as I'm concerned, she earned the title of American Idol. At least they can fix Jordin's vocals in the studio.
My man Elliott Yamin performed. I still contend that if he had his teeth fixed before last year's competition he'd have been the Idol instead of Taylor. Did you catch his big faux pas? Saying that he loves Porsches and would like one...except that the entire AI competition is sponsored by, uh, Ford! Hello?
Here's the video for the song he performed on last week's show.
** SPOILER ALERT FOR REST OF POST **
Now for this week's show:
They made the final venue upgrade: to the cavernous Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Four tiers of balconies and box seats. Blake won the coin toss and opted to go first.
For the three song choices, each contestant chose their favorite performance of the competition to sing again; a song they hadn't sung heretofore in the competition; and their own rendition of the songwriter's contest winners*.
The Final 2
Blake Lewis
Song 1: "You Give Love A Bad Name" (Bon Jovi) — I suspect Blake chose this since it was the one performance that had the most effective use of his beatboxing. While I'm tired of it, ya gotta dance with the one that brung ya. He did a great job.
Song 2: "She Will Be Loved" (Maroon 5) — Last week he sang "This Love" by Maroon 5 and it was an excellent song choice for him. This week he was smart and stuck to Maroon 5. He seemed really confident on stage...but the singing was marginal.
Song 3: "This Is My Now" (Krippayne and Peabody) — The song has a slow beginning where Blake sounded flat. Maybe that's because there wasn't much backup from the band. When the tempo picked up and the band punched it up he did seem better although I'm not sure he hit all the notes. Okay overall.
Styling: Argyle, argyle, argyle. Scotland called, they want their sweaters back.
Jordin Sparks
Song 1: "Fighter" (Christina Aguilera) — Last week I complained that Jordin seemed uninspired. For this song, she was really hot and into it. She belted it out and was off to a great start.
Song 2: "A Broken Wing" (Martina McBride) — She knocked it out of the park. Gave me goosebumps!
Song 3: "This Is My Now" (Krippayne and Peabody) — Beautiful. She connected with the song and her emotions came out at the end and brought tears to my eyes, too. Two words: Love. Her.
Styling: At long last, no unflattering dresses with hideous patterns. Better choices with the high waistlines she likes. Purple is her color.
The judges. What can I say that hasn't already been said? Should I say out loud what everyone is thinking? That Paula's broken nose is the result of a drunken stupor mishap rather than going ass-over-tulip the dog? I know, I know. I totally made that up — but we're all thinking it.
Final performance of the night was former Idol contestant Chris Daughtry singing I'm Going Home. This song was used to "play off" the contestants when they left the show. I'm such a spazz...I had no idea that was him singing.
* Scott Krippayne, a Christian singer-songwriter, and New Day Church pastor Jeff Peabody were announced as the song writing contest winners.

Okay, how cute is Elliot Yamin these days? Woof! But I don't think even with his teeth fixed he would have won last year. Taylor came in first week after week by a healthy margin--at least according to Dial Idol.
As for last night's performances, I agree that Jordin walked away with it although I was less enchanted by her first two songs than you were. But I remain one of her biggest fans and am proud that she did so well.
My comments about Elliott are two fold: First, I simply think he had the best voice. Second, in the show where he was bumped, he, Taylor, and Katherine each had nearly identical vote counts...~33%. I think that if he had been a tad cuter it would have been enough to put him in the final where I think he would have won!
