Douche Bag Of The Week: Michael Vick

When a Bad Newz Kennels dog was wounded in a losing fight, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was consulted before the animal was doused with water and electrocuted. That's just one of the gruesome details that emerged in an 18-page indictment filed in U.S. District Court. The Falcons have banned him from training camp.

Vick was charged with competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines. The operation was centered at a property Vick owned in Surry County, Virginia.

About eight young dogs were put to death after they were found not ready to fight in April 2007. They were killed "by hanging, drowning and/or slamming at least one dog's body to the ground."

Purses for the fights ranged from hundreds of dollars to the thousands, and participants and spectators often placed side bets on the outcome. After two of his dogs lost fights, the indictment alleges Vick gave a bag containing $23,000 to the owner of the winning dogs.

At the start, authorities seized 66 dogs. About half the dogs were tethered to car axles with heavy chains that allowed the dogs to get close to each other, but not to have contact - an arrangement typical for fighting dogs. Before fights, participating dogs would be weighed and bathed to remove any poison or narcotics placed on the dog's coat that could affect the other dog's performance. Fights would end when one dog died or with the surrender of the losing dog, which was sometimes put to death by drowning, strangulation, hanging, gun shot, electrocution or some other method.

If convicted of all the charges, Vick could face up to six years in prison, $350,000 in fines and restitution. I say they weigh him, bathe him, and throws him naked into a pen of vicious dogs while a crowd of people stands around and cheers his mauling. Before he dies, someone hoses him down and then electrocutes his ass.

This Douche Bag of the Week doesn't make me irritated because he's stupid, but angry because he's so evil.

I haven't been able to read the coverage of this, it's so upsetting. Someone who would do that to dogs is not right in the head, and I don't trust him around people, either.

Now that you've got little Teddy, I'm sure this hits even closer to home.

When I met my ex, he had a pit bull mix. She was aggressive to strangers but once she loved you, she loved you with all her heart. I came to love her and think of her as my own and was devastated when we had to put her down due to cancer.

I think pit bulls get a bit of a bad rap. If I was subjected to what these dogs were, I'd be aggressive and always looking for a fight too!

If trained right pit bulls are just fine.

But people get them because they're a tough urban dog - like my neighbors in DC. Hubby shows up with a little pit bull pup one day. Wife thinks she's cute. They sit out front with her, she's very sweet.

And then she gets big, the wife is over it, and the dog is chained out back (in a little 10x12 courtyard) all day and all night, just a little nook for shelter, bored out of her mind. When the wife gets home and the dog barks, she opens the back door and yells, "Shut up, bitch" and closes it. It was HORRIBLE to see (but, the dog had food water & shelter and therefore was not, according to SPCA, an animal they could seize for cruelty).

Fortunately after a while the wife's family (who had a teenage son) came and took the dog. The mom was more together than her daugher or son-in-law - when the dog came over with them to visit later, she seemed to be doing pretty well.

I never once saw them walk that dog in all the months it was there (in a little DC rowhouse).

Honestly, people should have to pass a test before they bring a pet home.
