I'm guilty. I drink bottled water.
Why? Because seeing things floating around in my water bothers me. And I like the taste better. Yes, I realize most bottled water is from public drinking supplies. But it's filtered so it really isn't the same as drinking from the tap.
Here in upstate NY the water isn't so bad, but in southern CA there is A LOT of stuff floating in the water. You hold up the glass and it's like you just scooped it out of a pond. They say it's because the water flows from northern CA to southern CA through a series of aqueducts and picks up a lot of sediment along the way. The water is treated, so all that stuff isn't harmful (or is it?), but safe doesn't mean good to me.
I'm definitely a recycler and the choice I've made to drink bottle water rubs me the wrong way. I've written to my local government representatives to add water bottles to the bottle bill so they can be returned. I understand that the type of plastic that water bottles are made of isn't recyclable. In my letters, I also suggest legislation to change the plastic to one that could be recycled.
If we're going to drink bottled water, lets take reasonable steps to reduce the pollution it generates.

Brita pitcher. Honestly. I have water bottles but I reuse them, filling them from the pitcher of filtered water I have sitting in the fridge. I have to admit it is more from being a cheapskate than from a guilty ecological conscience. But hey, if it works what difference does it make? I have actually seen a gizmo that you can attach directly to your faucet to filter the water as it comes of out of the tap.
Brita also makes water bottles, so you can fill it from any tap, the filter is in the nozzle, and away you go.
The other thing about bottled water is that filtered or not all water has bacteria in it. Sitting on the shelf for months at a time, there might be more bacteria in your bottled water than in the stuff that comes from the tap.
I never understood why water bottle aren't recyclable. Just put it in pop bottles. I wonder what the big deal is, and why they can't do that.
Water filters right on your tap! Can you imagine such a thing? What will they think of next?
