Hero Of The Week: Robin Roberts

Robin Roberts is back to work on Good Morning America already after her surgery for breast cancer. She discovered a lump during a breast self-examination a couple of weeks ago and promptly went to the doctor. Her prognosis is really good since it was caught early. With any cancer, the earlier the detection, the higher the survival rate.

Robin represents an amalgam of people who, in our own lives, bravely face being diagnosed with the 'c' word. They endure chemotherapy, radiation, homeopathic remedies, experimental drugs and treatments, etc. They're all heroes.

May Robin and all those battling terminal illnesses be rewarded with good health for their courage and inspiration.

I was a little creeped out, but mostly happy to overhear my Sister. She was having a conversation with her oldest daughter upstairs. Teaching her how to examine her breasts. I could tell that my sister was touching her and saying things like, "No move your fingers around like this."

Good that she caught it early, my heart goes out to all those facing this horrid disease. I wish we were funding advances in medicine instead of this shit for brains war. I wish stem cell research wasn't categorized as anti life by the zealots, and that we could make advances for Alzheimer's and PK. I wish that I could have been a proud American for the past seven years. I wish I could be a mindless, numb, yuppy who just didn't care.

I'm glad you included the link to the foundation. I think that as far as a community response, and it's important to realize I'm not speaking of individual examples of concern, only an organized collective effort, gay men have never hit the mark they needed to in being an ally for breast cancer. A disease which hits lesbians at disproportionately rates than straight women. Given the early and ongoing response of the lesbian community to the HIV crisis, our lack of community response is shameful.
