Concrete Or Flesh?

In many of my previous posts, you've see the corner section of the yard under the spruce trees. Over the past two years, I've put in a dump truck load of top soil, put in some retaining stones, planted a whole bunch of hosta and astilbe, and kept the concrete deer family that my parents bought decades ago.

Can you tell the real from the concrete? It is funny to watch the real deer look at the concrete ones and sniff them. Here there appears to be one adult and four juveniles. Usually it is just the adult with two juveniles born earlier this year that come around.

When T was here last week, we had three deer come into the same area of the yard and he was really shocked at how close they came. I explained to him that in the winter, they come right up to the house! Now, they seem to like the taste of the plant on the right and have started after the roses close to the house. The deer are a blessing and a curse.

[The pic is blurry because of the reflection of the flash in the window. By the time I turned the flash off, the camera was out of power. I corrected it some in Photoshop, but for now, let's pretend the deer are in the fog.]

Deer are pretty but they can be a gardeners worst nightmare. Have you considered coyote piss to keep them out of the garden. No joke, you can buy it at Home Depot.

The past two years, I've made sachets out of Irish Spring bar soap and cheesecloth. I put them in the shrubs at nose height so when the come for some dinner they get a snoot full of Ireland! It's worked so far!!!

If you hadn't spilled the beans, I'd have never known they weren't in fog. I'd take Irish Spring over coyote piss any day...

You're lucky. The only wildlife I get to see from my window are junkies and drunk frat boys.
