This is blog post 1,000!
Seems we bloggers use time references and number of posts as a recognition of accomplishment and a reason to reflect on what we do. After all, it ain't easy staying motivated and semi-interesting on a consistent basis.
Why Oh Why At 1,000
• I've done a good job at posting at least once a day, only missing a few days in a year and a half, and I'm happy about the mix of content. Hopefully, my regular readers have a sense that they'll never know what they'll find when the get here but at least it will be of some interest.
• I'm averaging about 200 hits a day — most are random and don't return.
• I haven't posted pics of the Capital District in a while...frankly, the winter has been ugly. I like the church photos I was putting up in the beginning and I need to get back to that. Showing and describing the area and what it's like to live here is one thing that can make the blog unique.
• I miss ranting against the neo-con columnist in the local paper. I find him tedious and a bit of a one trick pony although I was able to use those posts to write some political opinion. Even though he's on the back burner, I'll resurrect him if he comes up with anything uniquely stupid.
• Establishing special days such as "Hunk-A-Lot" on Wednesdays and "Sh!ts and Giggles" on Saturdays has helped give the blog some structure. And it has made it easier for me to manage my posts. My semi-regular "Douche Bag of the Week" and "Hero of the Week" posts scheduled for Fridays are entirely dependent on what's going on in the world — I try to make these a bit off the beaten path. It wouldn't be any fun to bash President Shrub every week. Then there are the television show post that I enjoy writing and that change depending on what's on the boob tube.
Most Popular Posts
I am surprised about what posts draw the most hits. The fact that I write about a variety of topics brings me a wide range of visitors via the search engines.
#1: Medusa Spider
Last year, I did full recaps of Lost. In this post, I mentioned the "medusa spider." Since this is a fictional creature made up by the writers, seemingly everyone searching for the arachnid wound up here. I'm talking thousands of hits from around the world.
#2: The Mirdle
An article in The Wall Street Journal mentioned a new undergarment for men. Essentially, a girdle. I thought I was clever and called it a Mirdle (man girdle). I wasn't as clever as I thought since many folks arrived on this post after searching for mirdle. This post also generated hundreds of hits from a site called buzzfeed.
#3: Kidney Stones
This topic spanned a half dozen posts last year. If my traffic to these posts is any indication, we are a world suffering from kidney stones. I feel your pain!
#4: Chris Meloni
If he were to start posing nude and sell the photos, this guy would be a billionaire. Of all my Hunk-A-Lot posts, I get at least 20 hits a day on this post and hardly anything on the others.
#5: TKTS
By now you should know that I'm a sucker for a good deal. Hey, how do you think I do what I do considering I've been semi-retired for almost 10 years? This post is popular with folks planning to go to the theater in New York City.
#6: Sweet Potato Vine
Yes, it is amazing that this post generates a continuous high volume. I mean, these chartreuse little plants are perfect for planters, but it seems they are wildly popular. Who knew?
So after 1,000 entries, that's what I know. I need to start paying more attention to my Alzheimer's Moments blog!

Happy 1000th. Here's to a million more :P
Congratulations on making your 1000th post. Not bad for a gent who only posts once a month. How old does that make you? :)
Congratulations!
You've reminded me to start preparing my 2500th - coming next month. I agree that it's the ones you least expect that get the most hits. Most of my hits are about Mimi Panzirer (the ex daughter-in-law of the ex Leona Helmsley), Owen Vanessa Eliott (daughter of Mama Cass - cited in one post many months ago now), and the Run-DMC video "It's Like That (That's Just The Way It Is)". I'm still waiting for the right time to post about Chris Meloni; maybe I should alert my ISP and warn them about the potential crash!
One other thing I've discovered is linking to photos; I have a link to a photo of JFK's grave that gets me hits via Google images. Also, I've noticed that I get lots of hits (and occasionally even reads) via Haloscan whenever I leave comments on Joe.My.God.
Congratulations!!! And you've been an inspiration to others to blog on, although not as faithful as you! :-)
Love you!
Congratulations! Your constancy is admirable. Perhaps my lazy ass will get a little more consistent. Well, not really but it sounds encouraging, no?
Here's to many many more-
Congrats on your 1000th post! I recently just found your blog and started blogging myself. You inspire others to blog their thoughts & humor. Plus you are an AI & Lost fan to boot! Love it!
Congrats Gavin! Glad to see you stuck with it. While I like the posts you mentioned, my fav is your Diana post, as it's a bit self revealing, historical, and really well written.
Thanks, Al, it is one of my faves as well. The posts I listed here are the ones with the heaviest traffic, not necessarily my best or favorites. I just re-read it myself and I really need to get back to that type of story telling.
The headline in the sidebar was originally just "Favorite Posts" for those that get the most hits but I added the "Yours & Mine" when I realized folks might miss those I thought were my best!
Congratulations! I remember those political posts against that idiot reporter--that's what first got me reading you regularly. Great blog!
it never occurred to me to think about how you do what you do. I have no idea what you do. Except take care of your mom.
Happy 1K! You are a blog machine. Keep 'em coming!
