I decided to convert my home phone service to the cable company. While I was at it, I upgraded to digital cable and got a new large screen television. The TV is a Magnavox 42" LCD 1080p 60Hz that we got at Sam's Club for $878. It isn't the very best, but after a lot of online research and visiting six stores to look at every set available, I can say it is the best picture/features for the price. I normally don't purchase service contracts but I bought the three-year deal for an extra $20.

What size was your previous set? Even a middling 42" has to be better than a good 27", especially if it's LCD.
Both sets are only 19". Ack!
I have only ever owned Sony TVs so I was a little wary to buy anything else. My mom has these little ones that date back to the 1970s and one of them is a Magnavox. I'm pretty sure Magnavox is now owned by Philips. I don't know if that was always the case.
The only drawback so far is that it's 60Hz so quick on-screen movement, such as sports action, tends to be a bit fuzzy. My brother has a 50" Sony with 120Hz but it set him back $2,800!
my tv is now a candle holder/shelf since something popped in it months ago and it no longer turns on. and i think the screen is about the size of a computer monitor. and i am not exaggerating. check you and your 42 incher out.
Like you I never purchased service contracts. But when my house took a direct hit from lightning last year and had to replace everything. (all covered by insurance thankfully)
I took the extra service contract out on the TV. It covers the pixels. So if one goes they replace it, but will not replace over 10 individial pixels, at that point they will replace the TV.
I barely watch TV anymore; I would if they'd put YouTube on it, though.
I think I bought the world's last new CRT television; its picture looks weird after watching DVDs on my laptop.
