The Old First Church of Bennington

The Old First Church of Bennington, VT was gathered in 1762 as the first Protestant church in Vermont. Much of the early history of Bennington and of Vermont took place in and around the original Meeting House and the present building shown here. It was completed in 1805 with a classic post-colonial American church architecture of New England. The Vermont Legislature designated the church as "Vermont's Colonial Shrine" in 1935 and it is still an active church community today fully 200 years after the church's dedication.

The town of Bennington was chartered in 1749 by New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth. It was the first town in the territory now known as Vermont and he named it after himself.

Poet Robert Frost and his wife are buried in the cemetery adjacent to the church.

Considering that I'm an agnostic, my fascination with churches seems odd. I find their architecture beautiful. I wish they were grocery stores, restaurants, or gas stations so I could get some use out of them instead of just driving by!

Ha! I went to the Washington National Cathedral yesterday, and was blown away -- by the building if not the message ...
