Before
The cat was enjoying a look out into the field as I snapped this pic of the daffodils during the first week in May. I put in a mini white picket fence every year...there is one of these on each side of a pea gravel walkway you can see at lower right. Just behind the fence is a lilac.
After
Two months later there's been quite a transformation. The daffodils are gone, but the hostas are up, and the lilac has filled out and is flowerless after blooming for most of June. A scrawny coreopsis is struggling in the shade. I put in two lavender-colored Astilbe that fit nicely behind the birdbath and in front of the fence. You can see the handle of a wagon I put on the walkway that is covered with potted plants.

looks good!
Pretty great. The problem with community gardening is that most things that can't be nailed down have a shorter life expectancy than a mayfly! Someone once stole concrete benches out of one of the gardens. However, it is a great way to have a backyard in the city, even with the wino's and the cruising tweekers.
