Winter Will Be Soon Upon Us

The bird bath, white picket fencing, and flower wagon have been washed and put away in the shed for the winter. The perennials have been clipped to the ground and annuals pulled up. The new daffodil and grape hyacinth bulbs are in, and the cactus dahlia bulbs have been lifted. The trellis is now in the garage; the snowblower, shovel, and a bag of rock salt have all been relocated there, too. The bird feeders are up, full of sunflower seeds and thistle, and there's suet for the downy woodpeckers and an occasion visit by the chickadees. And the garden gnomes, one standing under a bright red mushroom and the other laying playfully on his tummy, have been tucked neatly away until next year.

Hard to believe it will be another eight months before summer time. These are the times I miss California most!

As a life long New Englander, I have to admit, it's getting me a little down too. I could probably deal with the cold better if it wasn't for the shortness of the days. I hate leaving the house in the dark and coming home in the dark. But, it really makes spring feel like it was worth it.

I am about to spend my first winter in Maine after spending last winter in Florida. I'm pretty sure my blood is just going to freeze over one night and it'll be the end of me.

Winter sucks. In Vancouver we had nearly three weeks' worth last year, and I thought I'd die.

Brrrrrr! I know what you mean. When I first put my feet in the water at the beach today, I thought they would go numb! I even made some soup and a grilled ham and cheese sandwich tonight. Nothing like soup to warm you up!

I haven't been reading you that long, so I don't know what, if any, winter interest you have in your garden.

Between the birds and the deer and that you should be able to get a few wintertime photo posts up.

RG--Rich is a GREAT guy, even if he is rubbing in his newfound warmth after moving to St. Pete. He endured the northeast winters for a long time so I'll cut him some slack. The bitch. :) (I have to be nice to him since now I have a place to stay in Florida!)

MSM--Yes, the transition of photos from plants and flowers to deer, birds, squirrels, and snow will begin shortly.

I guess your back is better now. Damn girl, and I was bitching about having to rake leaves this weekend. I made Jim take me out to dinner as a reward for my labor, and was disappointed when he failed to present me an award for "Best Little Trooper".

Gavin....

It's PRRRRRRRRRR-fect out here in southern California. Low seventies and nice crisp evening air, good sleeping weather.
