Ed Weaver Is A Nitwit 4.7.07

This week's column was divided into three sections: The British soldiers captured by Iran; Speaker Pelosi in Syria; and Bushisms such as the "War on Terror."

Iran Captures British Soldiers
If you're a regular reader of this blog, you know I have a special black place in my heart for Iranian President Mahmoud "Short 'n' Smelly" Ahmadinejad. Mr. Weaver questions the U.K./U.S. response to these events and suggests something militarily should have been done rather than a backroom negotiation. Problem is, they weren't our sailors so it really wasn't up to us.

Getting rid of the Mullahs should be our top priority but I don't think using the military would be the wisest course of action. These jerkos have had it coming since the took our own 25 years ago. Yeah, I have a long memory.

In California, the woman that cut my hair was from Persia/Iran. They make the distinction as Iran is the current government but Persian is their ethnicity. Iranians are not Arabs. She was in her early 60's and treated me quite motherly. We always talked about the situation in Iran. She said these holier-than-thou clerics are the most corrupt people going and that the people hate them. Those demonstrations you see? The government sends buses to work sites and everyone has to get on and participate or lose their jobs. So they go along, give a half-hearted "Death to America" at lunch time, and then go on their merry way. No harm, no foul.

I believe the U.S. would be better served to reinforce to young Iranians that their government is corrupt and their economy is mismanaged. Driving that message home is what would really put the Revolutionary Council on the defensive. Right now the masses are irritated but not motivated enough to make the change. Making them unhappy is the way to get results.

Pelosi In Syria
Ed can't stand the thought of Nancy Pelosi taking any initiative to resolve our problems in the Middle East:

"...[her] jaunt to Syria has been an embarrassment."
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about her trip, other than if the Bush administration isn't going to listen to what the Baker-Hamilton commission said, somebody has to do it. It's obvious that Bush's plan isn't working and he's too stubborn, or too stupid, to do anything else. And she is third in line to his throne Presidency.

The "War On Terror"
Weaver is crabbing about Congressman Skelton striking the terms "War on Terror," "War on Terrorism," and the "War in Iraq." Of course, not liking these Bush catch phrases means he's a pinko communist that might as well be working for Osama bin Laden.

But now that the subject has been raised, I have to say I've always been uncomfortable with the term "War on Terror." That's the politically correct version. It's really a war on radical Islam, but we can't say that or Muslims from Jakarta to Paris will go ape shit in the streets.

Ed Weaver's column appears every Saturday in The Record newspaper in Troy, NY. I'd say he's a right-wing conservative, but all indications are that he's even whackier than that. His views are so skewed, and based in a reality that I don't even recognize, that I think he sees the world through fun house mirrors, only it isn't funny. He's proof of the theory that hindsight is 20/20, only his vision is 20/100...20 for those things that support his views, 100 for those that don't.

I'm not surprised that Ed Weaver has a problem with Nancy Pelosi. She's a woman and a democrat after all, that's already two strikes against her. And if you want to talk about "an embarassment" how about our crediblity on the international stage thanks to Dubya.

"The War on Terror" is phrase designed to elicit emotional blackmail in people to make them think that we're actually doing the right thing in Iraq. In actuality, there was not one single Iraqi on those planes on 9/11.
